Basmah is a Jeddah-based artist, whose work combines her interests in Islamic art, architecture and traditional Arabic poetry specifically from the Golden Age of Islam. Basmah takes inspiration from Islamic patters and explores spiritual ideas. She works between paper, canvas, silkscreen, copper and Plexiglas - all the materials that are either white, black or reflective.

Basmah received her MFA in London and is a global traveler representing the Islamic art scene; her work has been shown internationally.

Exhibitions / Commissions:

  • Current residency with KAEC from July —September; commissioned to create public sculpture
  • Work shown at Art Dubai, March 2018
  • Work shown at Shara, June 2018 (Jeddah)
  • Currently working and researching towards solo show in 2019 at Athr
  • Recipient of The Arab Women Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2014
  • Other exhibitions include Rizoma at the Venice Biennale (2013), 21,39 cultural initiative in Jeddah in 2014; Hajj: Journey into the Heart of Islam, British Museum, 2012

I use Islamic patterns and calligraphy as the main way to manifest ideas. My design for LIFEWTR is about the words “life” and “water,”, and the relationship between water, the moon and us.
